The challenge centers around the creation of the MoveIt app, an innovation aimed at catering to individuals like Jarno Lindeman, our main persona. Jarno, a 42-year-old design manager based in Berlin, is emblematic of the tech-dependent professionals of today. His day-to-day is filled with a flurry of activities, from making calls and checking emails to business travel. Yet, amidst this whirlwind of tasks, he seeks a solution to better his physical health and maintain a consistent fitness routine.
With Jarno's penchant for technology and reliance on his smartwatch for instantaneous information, the MoveIt app is designed to intertwine with his life, pushing fitness reminders to his wrist and offering in-depth exercise insights on his phone.
Before starting this journey, we will need to know who our users are, understand their challenges and difficulties and get a clear idea of their access needs. We will create a user persona and user scenario to help us empathise and understand our users.
Jarno Lindeman
42 Years, Berlin
Jarno Lindeman is a 42-year-old design manager at a local design company in Berlin. He is very tech-savvy and comfortable using his smartwatch and mobile phone. He regularly uses his watch to track his steps and check his heart rate, but he wants more information about his health and fitness. Jarno is focused, driven and self-motivated.
"I want to be able to exercise wherever I am, and have all the important information at my fingertips. Technology can help me achieve my fitness goals and improve my overall wellbeing."
Goals
Jarno’s primary goal is to gain strength with simple home workouts and improve his heart health. He wants to exercise consistently and be able to track his heart rate over time.
Pains
Jarno sometimes forgets to exercise, and his busy schedule can make it difficult for him to stick to a routine. He may also feel overwhelmed by the amount of health and fitness information available and unsure of where to start.
Attitudes
Jarno is focused on achieving his fitness goals, but he may need some guidance on where to start. He is comfortable using technology and expects his apps to be intuitive and easy to use.
Behaviours
Jarno prefers to follow an app on his phone to do workouts wherever he is, whether at an airport or at home. He likes having the most important information on his wrist (smartwatch), such as reminders to exercise.
Opinions
Jarno believes that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind, and he values the convenience of being able to track his health and fitness data on his smartwatch and mobile phone.
Motivations
Jarno is motivated to improve his health and fitness to lead a more productive and fulfilling life. He is committed to making small but consistent changes to his daily routine to achieve his goals.
Jarno wakes up at 6 AM to start his day. He puts on his smartwatch and checks his heart rate while getting dressed. He opens his phone to check his schedule for the day and sees that he has a busy day of meetings ahead. He sets a reminder on his watch to take a break and go for a walk at lunchtime.
Later in the day, Jarno has some downtime between meetings, so he opens his fitness app on his phone. The app suggests a quick 15-minute workout he can do in his hotel room or in a quiet corner of the office. He follows the workout routine, which includes a mix of body weight exercises and stretches. As he works out, he can see his heart rate and the number of calories burned on his smartwatch.
After the workout, Jarno is feeling energised and focused. He checks his phone and sees that he has hit his daily step goal already. He decides to set a new goal to walk an extra 1000 steps before the end of the day. He sets a reminder on his watch to take the stairs instead of the elevator for the rest of the day.
As the day comes to a close, Jarno checks his phone to review his workout and health data. He sees that he has made progress towards his fitness goals and feels satisfied with his efforts. He sets a new goal for the next day and goes to bed feeling motivated to continue his health and fitness journey.
Jarno wakes up at 6 AM and puts on his smartwatch. As he gets ready for the day, he checks his watch to see his step count and heart rate. He notices that his heart rate is higher than usual, which prompts him to consider doing a workout later in the day.
After a busy day of meetings and design work, Jarno heads to the airport to catch a flight to Paris for a design conference. As he waits for his flight, he pulls out his phone and opens the MoveIt app. The app suggests a quick 10-minute workout that he can do in a small space. Jarno follows the instructions on the app and feels energized and focused afterwards.
As Jarno arrives in Paris, he checks his watch to see how many steps he has taken so far. He notices that he is behind his daily goal and decides to take a short walk around the airport before heading to his hotel.
Later in the evening, Jarno opens the MoveIt app on his phone again and selects a longer workout that focuses on strength training. He sets his phone on a small table in his hotel room and follows the instructions on the app. He feels a sense of accomplishment as he completes the workout and tracks his heart rate during the session.
Jarno continues to use the MoveIt app throughout his trip to Paris, finding time for workouts in between conference sessions and exploring the city. The app helps him stay motivated and focused on his fitness goals, even when he's traveling for work.

Strava is a popular fitness app that caters to individuals with a competitive edge. The app not only tracks your runs and bicycle rides but also creates a sense of competition by comparing your performance with others who travel the same routes. Strava syncs with various fitness trackers and running watches, allowing users to use the app without carrying their phone. While offering some privacy settings, Strava requires users to make certain personal information, particularly geolocation data, public to fully utilize the app's features. However, Strava has faced criticism for its handling of personal data, potentially putting users at risk.
Strava caters to individuals who are competitive and enjoy the social aspects of fitness tracking. It appeals to users who seek motivation through friendly competition and value the ability to track their progress and compare it with others. The app may not be suitable for those who prioritize privacy or prefer a less competitive environment.

Lack of Guidance
Lack of detailed guidance on exercise technique. While the app provides a variety of exercises to choose from, beginners may find it challenging to learn proper form without additional instructional resources.
No Breaks
The absence of a built-in break between exercises, as users have expressed the desire for a short rest period to transition smoothly between different types of exercises.
We are now ready to ideate and conceptualise our ideas based on our users’ needs.
During our design process, we organized an Ideation Workshop to delve into the requirements and needs of our users. To kick-start the session, we initiated a brainstorming session to generate a wide range of ideas. Subsequently, we employed the MoSCoW technique to prioritize the essential features that would greatly benefit our target persona in the workout app.
Following the feature prioritization, we focused on structuring and categorizing these features in a hierarchical manner, ensuring a logical and intuitive organization for both the phone and wearable solutions. This hierarchical structure enables users to easily navigate and access the relevant functionalities and information within the app.
During the ideation workshop, we concluded with important features that we should include in the app. However, we recognised the importance of designing with content first in mind. We therefore set up a discussion in order to answer the following:
That you can easily track and conduct fitness exercises customised to your need.
By reminding the user to be consistent, enable them to customise and set up their own workout routines that are easily available for them as well as encourage their achievements.
By creating a product based on our persona’s needs and goals, we will create a product that will reach our target audience.
We prepared the prototype by connecting the low-fidelity wireframes together and making certain elements interactive.
Mid-Fidelity Wireframes
Mid-Fidelity Wireframes
Mid-Fidelity Wireframes
Throughout the course of the MoveIt app project, we diligently adhered to the design thinking process. Understanding the unique requirements of our primary users, particularly busy professionals on-the-go, we developed mid-fidelity wireframes tailored for both wearables and phone applications. This design approach ensured a user-centric solution, seamlessly integrating fitness and technology for our target audience.
Our journey with the MoveIt app thus far has been both challenging and rewarding, illuminating the paramount importance of a user-focused design approach. While the wireframes offer a promising direction, to further refine our designs and ensure they truly resonate with our users, our next crucial step is conducting usability testing. This will help us gather feedback, make necessary adjustments, and continue to create a product that effectively bridges busy lifestyles with consistent fitness routines.
Thanks!
